Gravel Road Requiem

they crisscross in the dark
on the outskirts of Urbana
like the lines on the old man’s hand
they roll beside the tracks
and the woods outside of Chester
in dots and broken dashes on the map
and some are dry and cracked
and some are washed away
some linger on like a fading tatoo
and they go to forgotten places
and they all have secret names
like Hardin’s Run and Old Route 22

will you be my friend
can I take you to the end
can you show me where I’ve been
can you say you knew me then
this is my gravel road requiem

I’m riding on a dirt road
in early summer in the dark
I never thought this place would be so wise
and the living room lights
from the houses on the hills
roll on by, disappear before my eyes
and I follow the line
traced out by the power lines
beyond the ridge and out of sight
but not out of my mind

the engine burns
and I’m sleeping with my eyes half open
roll down the window to stay awake
this ain’t the place to come looking for a change
I’m the one who’s older
all my roads all the same

just waiting on my muse
to sing me to sleep
just looking for inspiration
in the gravel at my feet
just looking for a back road
to teach me something about me
just looking out for something
a little lonelier than me

I absolutely love this song, it’s beautiful :)

  3. And Lucas did speak thusly:

Magnificent. It was a frequent companion during my bouts of depression. It still follows me around, when I am walking my lonely and sad roads; in need of reminding that there are things lonelier than me.
