I <3 Metal

I’m starting to see the rock-n-roll devil sign \m/ emoticon show up here and there, and I wonder: did Matt and I actually start that, or were we late to the party?

Anyway. One summer back in Ohio, a buddy of mine and I were driving to Indiana. It was triple-digit heat, and we had all the windows rolled down and the tape deck was blasting Iron Maiden’s Piece Of Mind and we were singing and bellowing all the way through it and pounding the dashboard in time with Nikko’s drums. When the tape ended, my friend (a law student at that time) punched the eject button and then pumped a fist in the air, exclaiming, “oh god, I love Iron Maiden. I’m going to study really hard so I can be the best lawyer and make a ton of money so I can buy…a pirate ship.

Iron Maiden: Motivating People to Excellence Since 1980!TM

Must-have 80’s metal queued up for downloading into the iPod:

  • Mötley Crüe – Shout At The Devil
  • Mötley Crüe – Too Fast For Love
  • Iron Maiden – Piece Of Mind
  • Iron Maiden – Powerslave
  • Def Leppard – Pyromania (and nothing else)
  • Quiet Riot – Metal Health
  • Whitesnake – Whitesnake (John Sykes crushes all)
  • Queensrÿche – Operation: Mindcrime

What am I forgetting?

  1. And Pike did speak thusly:

But did he get his pirate ship?

  2. And L Hallal did speak thusly:

    You are frightening me.

  3. And Paul Roub did speak thusly:

    Motorhead – Orgasmatron.

Not an “80’s metal” band per se, but Orgasmatron dates to the mid-80’s, so I’d count it.

I was working in a record store at the time, and it proved very effective for waking us up from mid-afternoon drowsiness. Also (and much louder) for clearing the store at 5 minutes ’til closing.

We did get complaints from other stores in the mall that they were unable to hear their vacuum cleaners.

  4. And Save You From Yourself Contributor!Ed did speak thusly:

Hmm.. I think I know the budding law student you are referring to. And to the best of my knowledge, he does not yet own a pirate ship. But when he gets one, he better give me a ride.

Here’s a few to add to the list:

Judas Priest – You’ve Got Another Thing Coming
Faith No More – Surprise, You’re Dead!
Megadeth – Peace Sells.. But Who’s Buying?
Anthrax – I am the Law
Accept – Balls to the Wall

    I’ll stop now..

  5. And Guy Carberry did speak thusly:

    Individual tracks or whole albums?

    I’ll go on the albums i think…

Judas Priest – Metal Works 73-93
Iron Maiden – Number of the beast
    Iron Maiden – Iron Maiden
    Anthrax – Persistence of time
Skid Row – Slave to the grind

  6. And scottandrew did speak thusly:

Oh man, how could I’ve forgotten Priest? Added. And thought it’s not their best album in the least, I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Turbo.

Anthrax is very, very good (the band, that is). I’d add the albums Spreading The Disease and State Of Euphoria to that list.

And I guess I left off most of Cliff Burton-era Metallica too: Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets, all essential listening.

  7. And Matt Haughey did speak thusly:

    You forgot a classic:

    Dio – Heaven and Hell

    \m/

  8. And Kevin Smokler did speak thusly:

Judas Priest’s Screaming for Vengance. Duh

  9. And Goh did speak thusly:

Yngwie Malmsteen- Rising Force (ridiculous songs about vikings and shit)
    Manowar
    Scorpions
    Stryper- haha

  10. And Derek did speak thusly:

Iron Maiden pre-Bruce Dickinson: can’t recall Album but remember Phantom of the Opera (not Lloyd Webber!)

Iron Maiden – Live after Death
    WASP – WASP
WASP – Inside the Electric Circus
Manowar – Fighting the world (feat. Orson Welles on bass [the voice, not the guitar])

  11. And John Keogh did speak thusly:

You’ll like this picture, then! http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/archives/photos_concerts_events/030804_92.shtml

By the way, 80s goths in London think we had the “devil” sign first, so there ner ner ner

  12. And L Hallal did speak thusly:

    I must add a long-ago fave:
    “Man on the Silver Mountain”
    Ritchie Blackmore & Rainbow

  13. And No' did speak thusly:

Helloween – Live in the UK
Helloween – Keeper of the Seven Keys part. I & II

  14. And Katie did speak thusly:

Stryper? I spit on your Stryper. You can’t go wrong with Queensryche and Quiet Riot.

  15. And Someone from Italy did speak thusly:

Am I wrong or no-one has spoken the word “Saxon” yet?
I’d suggest The Eagle Has Landed – Live, contains the very best of their very best.

  16. And Spencer Bennett did speak thusly:

Hmmm… You guys must not be rocking hard enough. How about a little Slayer or Sepultura?

  17. And scottandrew did speak thusly:

Slayer was the first metal show I went to. When I was twenty, I saw them with Motorhead and Overkill at the Phantasy Theater in Cleveland. It was a positively scary experience.

Can’t say I’ve heard much Sepultura.
