Near-famous classmates

A week or so ago my old school buddy Jeff was in Seattle for a few days and brought over a DIY CD by fellow classmate Marla Sgro. It’s been years since Marla and I graduated high school in West Virginia; we were both involved in the school’s musical theatre program (she played Maria, I played Max Detweiler — ah, nevermind).

Turns out Marla is still around and has been busy recently. She’s putting out her first CD “A Pocketful Of Nails” via CafePress, has opened for Elton John and John Mellencamp, and even did some music for Nickelodeon. She’s sort of carving out a niche as the local KT Tunstall-meets-Sheryl Crow of the Three Rivers area, which is awesome.

But mostly I was blown away by the serendipity. I kept turning Marla’s CD over and over in my hands — a CD not much physically different from those first 50 or so copies of Where I’ve Been that I burned, printed and assembled in my basement — thinking NO WAY!

You can listen to some audio samples at Marla’s MySpace page.

    Well….

She last logged into MySpace 10 weeks ago in early August.

Her last comment was in early September ffrom someone asking if she fell off the face of the planet.

Safari crashed trying to triple verify this - because you really don’t post links this far dead - and two times could still be my fault.

Conclusion? You have NOTHING to be jealous of. Of course, I’m still wishing I could hear a sample at least… always liked your recommendations.

    Peace.

hello scott? im not sure which scott i am speaking with. I thought maybe scott lePera. thank you for your kind words and i am flattered. its true, the cd wasnt made like it should have been and i have to make sure the next one is better. i have been very sick for many months fighting ms. but
i think ill be playing in a month or so around here just to keep it going.
my best friend runs my myspace page because i alwys had dial up ! it was too hard and i got annoyed so i gave up.
now i have high speed and need to check in everyday or so. i currently have a conttract for songwriting but i am having problems getting finished products delivered to my song man.
its slowly happening. i need to get a few small breaks into this and then ill feel better.
where is scott lePera? and are you talking about jeff sobel? he is the bom.
both of those guys were the bom! i loved them. so gifted and smart. i always felt inferior to them.
ill never forget those plays. even thought the other kids hated me for getting sick. i just saw Kelsey the other day. sherry showlater was murdered on saturday. Kelsey was there.
the guy shot her in the head at home in new cumberland! her favorite song was “bumps and bruises’. she and theother girls used to play that song over and over in the juke box at their bar. women would approach me about how their redneck boyfrineds and husbands used to beat them and get drunk!
i was angry at men in some of that music so they related to it!
amazing. sherry was buried with my cd and her “bumps and bruises.”
love ya sherry god bless you.

by scott. tell everyone hi. and write me if you care.

im just here in chester. bye now.
