Song Lab: “Green” rewrite with bass and drums
Here’s a new version of “Green” (formerly titled “Song Containing The Word ‘Green’”) with rough drums and bass guitar. It took awhile to get FL Studio to give me the type of groove I was looking for — it’s a great program, but some features are so non-intuitive sometimes I wonder what they were smoking when they designed them.
I didn’t spend a lot of time getting things perfect; my goal was to get the drums and guitar down so I could rehearse the bass parts. The vocals were almost an afterthought, although I think they work pretty well in this mix so I might have to jot down those settings.
Unlike most of my other recordings, this one features a single guitar tracked in stereo. This is also the first time I’ve recorded everything at such a low volume: -12db on average.

Sounds real nice. I like the drum track. Solid. Have you found a respectable rim shot sample to feed FL? Their presets don’t do it for me. I might have to record one to use, either a real one, or sample one from my Korg o/1w. It had a solid rim sound. Keep up the good work. I like this song a lot. Very catchy.
Hey Dean, check out Doug Whates’ NS Kit, it’s got a lot of nice rim shot and x-stick samples, all WAVs of actual drums.
Looks like Doug moved the free version to his
forums over here.
Other than the kick samples in the RealDrumKits pack, I don’t really use any of the FL preset drum sounds.
