Brainstorming a cover album

I’m planning to do an EP of cover songs in the next six months or so. I’ve been messing around with a five- or six-song track list for awhile now.

What songs would you enjoy hearing me cover?

    Sabotage by the Beastie Boys
    ;o)

More 80s songs (like the medley)

I can’t really suggest specific songs, but I **would** like to hear you come up with some cover versions which sound totally different from the originals – ever heard Tori Amos’ take on “Smells Like Teen Spirit”?

David Kitt (great Irish singer-songwriter) did a great covers CD in 2004, “The Black And Red Notebook”. Imagine “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville” revamped as Kraftwerk-style “motorik” electronica, or a gentle acoustic vamp of “Pressure Drop” by Toots and the Maytals…

    Food for thought :-)

Tori amos did a whole CD of covers, which is fantastic.

Maybe you could cover Baby Got Back? Actually, I wonder how some original Coulton material might sound with a whole new take — a mellow RE: Your Brains or Code Monkey? Someone is Crazy? Or even a rockin’ I Crush Everything?

Or cover one of Erik’s songs.

  4. And Ben Compton did speak thusly:

Here are five more or less off the top of my head:

    * “Battery” by Metallica
    * “Radio Cure” by Wilco
    * “Stray Dog And The Chocolate Shake” by Grandaddy
    * “Iodine” by Jawbox
    * “Bitte Ein Kuss” by Onelinedrawing

and Melissa says you should do that Phil Collins song you sang at karaoke that one night she was there.

  5. And Holger did speak thusly:

Anything by Nick Drake would be cool. And I love Billy Pilgrim, although their style is already very similar to yours.

Maybe something completely different? Lamb is great, as are some songs by Faithless. Or Goldfrapp.

If you want, I can dig out some songs I like that might fit. Just drop me a line.

  6. And Nate did speak thusly:

    Ace of Spades.

  7. And spinhead did speak thusly:

Kashmir. Don’t even mess with it; just acousticize and sing it your style. Shorter, of course. It has the same feel as your lyrics already (thoughts and feelings vs. storytelling.)

Chris Isaak’s “Can’t Do A Thing” – you could *own* it.

Fellow FAWMer Charlie Cheney’s “Gene Autry Memorial Interchange” would be a stupendous nod to a great but obscure songwriter.

    Counting Crows “Goodnight Elisabeth”

    “Chocolate Cake” by Crowded House

“The Sporting Life” by the Decemberists

    Dire Straits’ “Romeo and Juliet”

“Can’t Get it Out of My Head” off ELO’s “Eldorado”

    Lemme know when you’re head’s full and I’ll stop . . .

“Running on Faith”, pretty much the way Clapton covered it; has a warmth and earnestness that shows up a lot in your songs.

Can you be persuaded to do City Of New Orleans? Or Fireworks, by Embrace – I think their songs would suit you (they are a late 90s band from England).

  9. And scottandrew did speak thusly:

There are some really excellent ideas here. Please keep ‘em coming :)

  10. And Save You From Yourself Contributor!Kevin Smokler did speak thusly:

I would love to hear a full version of Pac Man Fever.

  11. And brian did speak thusly:

what about doing some of the older folk songs from some of the early singers from the ’20’s to 50’s

  12. And Save You From Yourself Contributor!Glenn Peters did speak thusly:

How about a LONGER version of Kashmir?

    Or Immmigrant Song?

Maybe The Police? Something from Brimstone and Treacles, or the rarer songs from the boxed set? These kids today don’t get the Police, they’re all listening to The Beatles, so maybe Roxanne would work.

  13. And Save You From Yourself Contributor!Dean did speak thusly:

Rumplestiltskin, Peas and Carrots, or Maypo?

  14. And spinhead did speak thusly:

Kashmir, longer. What a concept. Joked with a friend once (well, half joking) that if we ever put a band together and played bars, we’d do ‘Gloria’ for the third set. Just ‘Gloria’, for 45 minutes. Even if they noticed, they probably wouldn’t even care if we did it right.

    But not on an album.

Kids are listening to the Beatles? Musta missed that. I do know a fingerstyle guitar player named Jim Earp who covers ‘Walking on the Moon’ in his live shows; very different from the original, but incredibly cool.

  15. And Save You From Yourself Contributor!Michael did speak thusly:

if you’re doing Boston and need a lead fiddle (or harmonized fiddle/mando) you know where to find me :)

  16. And Kerry did speak thusly:

Well, the Richard Shindell of your choice PLUS the one of my choice which would be Next Best Western. Also I think you could do a kick ass version of David Gray’s Hospital Food. OR anything at all by Kris Delmhorst. OR you could use your amazing super power and do the Peter Gabriel voice thing, but I would want fair warning about that in advance, like an actual warning label.

  17. And Dale did speak thusly:

How about Tim Buckley’s Buzzin Fly? I always thought this would make good Pearl Jam cover.

  18. And Save You From Yourself Contributor!Jake did speak thusly:

I wouldn’t mind seeing any of the following.

    Barenaked Ladies: Jane
Mike Doughty: Looking at the World From the Bottom of a Well
    Joni Mitchell: Big Yellow Taxi
Simon and Garfunkel: Only Living Boy in New York

    And just because I’m hateful

    Sonata Arctica: Full Moon

[...] Thanks to everyone who suggested cover songs. Some great ideas in that thread I’ll be mulling over. For the record, I plan to release that [...]

  20. And Charlie Cheney did speak thusly:

I was vainly googling my name and found this link… want to give special thanks to Spinhead for the kind words. I’d be honored if anyone covered one of my songs… I just reposted it on my myspace page in case you want to hear it…

See you all in Feb. on FAWM.
    Much love to all. -Charlie
