The track list
Check out all the awesomeness. This pre-order thingy has waaay exceeded my expectations. If you’ve already participated, thanks again. If not, there’s still a little time left to get your pre-order in.
I promised the pre-orderers that I’d write about the album tracklist this week, so here it be…
- More Good Days — originally done as a quick demo on my birthday EP but never released to the general public. We re-recorded the whole thing with better instruments and stronger vocals.
- Holding Back — totally re-recorded with a new drum arrangement, violins from Michael Spaly and guest vocals from Laurie Katherine Carlsson. Re-doing this one was a tough call since it’s one of the more popular tunes I’ve written, but now I LOVE the newer version.
- You Are Loved — if you’ve pre-ordered the CD you’ve already heard this one, although we did make some changes to the final mix. In contrast to the demo, this one now has a full band arrangement, with face-melting electric guitars and harmony vox from Jerin Falkner.
- A New Year — totally re-recorded with better instruments, much improved vocals and real sleighbells. Jim’s favorite track.
- Not The One — this is a new one which I’m still learning to play live. Uptempo Pete Yorn-/Jesse Malin-style rocker with lots of electric guitars and weird keyboards. One of my favorite tracks on the album.
- Weightless — re-recorded with electric guitars, B3 organ and rock drums. Jim wisely put the kibosh on my attempts to clutter this track with guitar solo.
- Happy For Me — I released a pop demo of this tune on my birthday EP but wasn’t all that happy with it. This version is a bit more alt-countryish, features harmony vox from Alissa Jandt and just rocks harder IMO. I’m putting the pop demo on the guest compilation CD, so if you pre-order, you’ll get both.
- Have We Learned — the demo of this was fairly horrific, but this new recording has a proper drum track, more guitars and backing vox from Alissa.
- Save You From Yourself — It took me years to finish this song, but it’s another one of my favorites. Still learning how to play it live. Another uptempo rock song, half-brother to tunes like Pushover and American Thing.
- At The Airport — a lot of people like this tune so I wanted to finally do it justice. Completely re-recorded with Michael playing mandolin, subtle organ and a real snare played with real brushes. That last bit is only important if you were already aware that almost all the drums on my tunes are done with software.
I also considered including a single cover song on the album, but honestly couldn’t think of anything that fit. I’ll probably just save that idea for my covers EP I’m planning for next year. Some other tunes like Dark Corners and Valentines didn’t make the cut, and will probably be released on an EP of their own around the same time.
And there you have it. Remember, if you pre-order the CD, you’ll get a signed copy plus a digital download of the full album when it’s finished, in addition to lots of other goodies. Operators are standing by!
